In order to achieve an open matte look for Avengers: Endgame, the film’s shot on a Panavision Genesis digital intermediate with Arri Alexa XT cameras. To get the desired effect, visual effects supervisor Dan Deleeuw turned to The Third Floor, who provided a service called “Open Matte Regrade.”
“The Third Floor is a company that specializes in matte regarding,” Deleeuw explains. “It’s a way of making movies look more like they were filmed on film instead of digital. They take all the digital footage and help us get an appropriate look and feel for it-like we’re filming again. And by doing so, we can create an open matte image that looks much closer to what was actually shot on camera.”
Open Matte Regrade is not a new technique by any means. In fact, it dates back well over a decade to films like Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame has been re-graded by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) from a “PG-13” to an “R”. This change means that the film is now rated for ” Older Teen ” viewers.
This rating change comes as a result of new content that was added to the film after its original release. The new content includes several scenes in which violence against civilians is depicted.
